Is it possible and how to wash onesies in a machine and by hand?
Modern costumes called “kigurumi” are worn by both adults and children. To prolong the pleasure of your favorite thing, you need to properly care for it.
A competent choice of detergents, stain removers, washing mode, and drying method allows you to preserve the shape and color of the overalls.
Timely, delicate cleaning of the pile does not affect the texture and thermal properties of the material.

What fabrics are they made from?
To sew plush overalls, both synthetic and natural fabrics are used:
- velsoft,
- fleece,
- polyester,
- velours,
- flannel.
Soft velsoft has good hygroscopicity, but also quickly releases moisture. These qualities are important when washing and drying the product.
Fleece is a denser fabric with less ability to absorb moisture. Both materials retain their texture perfectly, as they practically do not pill.
Velsoft, fleece and velor with a knitted base do not shrink after getting wet. They do not wrinkle after washing and therefore do not require ironing. At the same time, velsoft is softer than fleece and holds its shape a little worse.
After prolonged wear and several washes, velsoft pajamas may sag a little. If you follow the rules, synthetic velvet onesies can be machine washed.
Some summer pajama models are made from pure cotton fabric. Despite all the obvious advantages (environmentally friendly, hygroscopic), the material has some operational limitations.
Selecting a detergent
Liquid laundry detergents and laundry soaps without fragrances or dyes are suitable for overalls. Do not use bleaches, liquids with chlorine or other aggressive substances. Use concentrated conditioner for rinsing.
Liquid products of the brand have proven themselves well:
- Sodasan,
- Lavel,
- Cotico Baby,
- Baby Line,
- Weasel,
- Eared Nian.
When choosing a product, they are guided by the washing method (manual or automated), the type of fabric, and the degree of contamination.
It is known that laundry soap has some bleaching effect. This property should be taken into account if there are darkening or stains on the fabric.
Preparation for the process
Before starting the washing process, You must read the instructions for the clothing. It is presented briefly on a label on the reverse side.
Icons and numbers indicate which mode and washing conditions are possible for this product. At the same time, there are general rules for preparing onesies for washing.
Some local contamination should be pre-treated with a neutralizing agent.. Subsequent washing will remove any remaining dye and cleaner from the fabric.
Before putting the overalls in the washing machine drum or basin, check its pockets. The pajamas are turned inside out. This measure protects the pile from abrasion. Finally, the onesies are fastened with all the buttons.
Step-by-step instruction
Products with velvety pile are not recommended to be dry cleaned. Manufacturers of unusual costumes recommend giving preference to washing by hand. This is especially true for models with plastic parts on the hood. As the drum rotates, they may come off or peel off.
How to do this correctly in a washing machine?
Kigurumi should be washed separately from other items. The detergent must be suitable for use in a machine. The sequence of the process is the same for any type of fabric.
The differences are only in the choice of mode and temperature setting:
- Thing put in a drum. Detergent is added to the main wash compartment. The average amount of liquid product per overall is from 50 to 100 ml, depending on the degree of contamination.
- To the rinse aid compartment pour a portion of conditioner. It will give the fabric additional softness and eliminate static charge when worn.
- For onesies made of velvety fabrics set the mode “Delicate wash for synthetics”, for cotton – “Delicate wash for cotton”. The temperature for fleece and cotton is a maximum of 40 degrees, for velsoft and polyester is a maximum of 30 degrees.
- Disable the spin function. If your washing machine does not have this option, you should monitor the process yourself and turn off the machine after the last rinse is completed.
Wash by hand
This method is more labor-intensive, but more delicate in relation to the fabric and cut of the pajamas. Detergents are chosen at your own discretion from the list of recommended ones, since in this case there are no restrictions.
Washing by hand is carried out according to the following scheme:
- Warm water is poured into a basin or bath (for fleece, cotton - 40 degrees, for velsoft, polyester - 30 degrees). Dissolve detergent in it. For onesies made of fleecy synthetics, pour a large volume, since the fabric absorbs a lot of water.
- Place the suit in the container and let it get completely wet. Leave the item to soak for 20-30 minutes.
- Onesies are washed with gentle squeezing movements, turning them over periodically. The most contaminated areas on a cotton suit can be lightly rubbed in your hands.
- The product is rinsed 2-3 times in clean water. At the last stage, conditioner is added to the container. Squeeze without twisting.
If the liquid has cooled down too much after soaking, add a little hot water and soap. Before doing this, the suit must be removed from the basin so that hot water does not get on the fabric.
How to dry?
After the overalls have been washed and excess water has been squeezed out, it is laid out on a dry, dense cloth that absorbs moisture well. Dry at room temperature. All buttons and zippers on the suit are fastened so that all the details are completely straightened.
When the fabric is dry, the suit can be hung on the crossbar for final drying. Synthetic velvet dries very quickly, so you don't have to spend a lot of time drying. Cotton overalls require a slightly longer drying period.
Removing stains
The structure of plush fabrics makes it easy to remove stubborn dirt. If serious dyes are to blame for the appearance of the stain: greens, wine, coffee, tea or fat, then it is recommended to use special compounds.
To remove a fresh greasy or oily stain, wipe the fabric with a swab dipped in diluted ammonia. The proportion of the solution is 1:1.
To lighten grass marks, use a non-standard “bleach” - a gauze bandage impregnated with peroxide. Coffee, chocolate and tea stains are removed using a super concentrated salt solution.
To remove traces of baby slime, the costume is placed in the freezer. After freezing, carefully scrape off the contamination with a spoon or blunt knife.
Errors when washing
The use of hot water leads to deterioration of the quality of the pile and the appearance of a gray-yellow color.. At the same time, cold water also creates a problem - the item cannot be washed. The only way out can be strict adherence to the temperature regime.
The third common mistake is ignoring the gentle spin of the product.. Regular twisting by hand or using a centrifuge leads to deformation of the shape of the onesie. Removal of excess water and drying must be carried out according to the rules.
Conclusion
Delicate fabrics and complex styles of onesies require careful handling during washing and removing stains.
It is recommended to remove dirt from the fleecy surface using special mild means followed by the use of conditioner.
The choice between manual and automatic washing is at personal discretion.. The most important thing in this matter is to comply with all the conditions and rules, in this case the overalls will please its owner for a long time.
