Gel and roll-on: is there a difference when removing paste stains?
A gel pen is more easily soiled - the water-based pigment does not dry out as quickly, so the inscription is easy to smudge. And ballpoint pen ink contains an oil mixture; stains on leatherette will be more corrosive.
How to remove traces using traditional methods?
First, you need to test the product on a small and inconspicuous piece of leatherette. There is a possibility that the solution will be too aggressive and, together with the ink paste, will remove the color of the jacket or sofa.
Soap solution
You can use a soap solution from laundry soap or dishwashing detergent:
- It is more convenient to remove the stain with a brush. You can use an old toothbrush. It needs to be soaked in a soapy solution.
- Use a soap brush to scrub the stained area until the ink fades.
- Then it is recommended to wipe the leatherette with a dry cloth.
This is a universal method, suitable for gel and ballpoint pens. But it will take a long time to scrub. Do not apply too much force, otherwise the texture of the fabric may be damaged.
Ammonia
Ammonia solution removes marks well ink pen. But it can ruin the fabric, so usually ammonia is mixed with glycerin in a 1:1 ratio. Rub the leatherette with this solution until the stain completely disappears.
Liquids containing alcohol
Vodka, alcohol, cologne and almost any other alcohol-containing liquid will easily remove stains from a gel or ballpoint pen:
- you need to wipe off the stain with a sponge moistened with alcohol;
- wipe the area with glycerin.
How to remove with milk?
You need to make a milk compress: soak a napkin in warm milk and apply it to the stain.
In this state, you need to leave the leatherette for 15 minutes., and then rinse the area with water and wipe dry.
To make the result more obvious for old stains, before applying the compress, you need to wipe the stain with a sponge soaked in milk. But the compress itself is applied fresh.
Soda
A solution with soda is used for two-stage cleansing:
- You need to prepare a solution: a teaspoon of baking soda per glass of warm water.
- Apply the solution to the sponge and wipe off the ink.
- Prepare a soap solution to remove soda particles from leatherette.
This method is best used for old ballpoint pen stains.
Salt
You can use regular coarse or finely ground salt:
- Clean leatherette with soapy water;
- sprinkle with salt so that it completely covers the stain;
- leave the leatherette in this state for several hours (about 5);
- remove the salt with a damp cloth and wipe the cloth dry.
Lemon acid
You need to make a solution: dilute 2-3 g of citric acid in 250 ml of water.
Blot the sponge with the solution and rub the stain until it becomes lighter. After half an hour, wash the leatherette with soapy water and wipe dry.
The method works for ballpoint pen ink. Acid can greatly lighten an area of fabric. Instead of citric acid solution, you can use freshly squeezed lemon juice.
Hair fixation spray
This method must be used very carefully, since overexposure will lead to the opposite effect: the stain will not only not be removed, but will also become even more difficult to remove:
- Spray regular hairspray over the stained area;
- wait 15 minutes;
- Wipe the area with soapy water.
Good for removing old ballpoint pen stains.
Hydrogen peroxide
For old stains, it is recommended to use hydrogen peroxide:
- You need to moisten cotton wool with peroxide and wipe the damaged area with it.
- Leave the fabric to dry for 10 minutes.
- Wash off any remaining hydrogen peroxide with an alcohol-containing liquid.
- Wipe the leatherette with soapy water and wipe dry.
Construction tape
It is not necessary to use construction tape; you can use regular tape., but it will be slightly less efficient:
- Glue a piece of tape to the leatherette with the stain.
- Wait a little (10-15 minutes).
- Carefully tear off the tape so as not to damage the leatherette.
- Repeat until the ink is completely removed, and then remove the remaining glue with soapy water.
Adhesive tape absorbs water-based ink well. But if you remove it abruptly, part of the leatherette can be peeled off along with the tape, so you can’t use the method near cuts, even after they have been restored.
Dry mustard
Dry mustard is used infrequently. It is suitable only for dark products. Often yellow stains remain after its use:
- mix mustard powder with water to form a creamy substance;
- Apply the composition to the stain and leave for 20 minutes;
- remove the mustard with a damp cloth and thoroughly wash the area with soapy water.
Despite the possibility of “side effects,” paste of any color can be washed off without problems.
Sulfur powder
It is unlikely that you will find regular sulfur powder at home, so it is easier to use a match:
- Wet the area with water.
- Use the head of a match to rub the stain.
- Remove any remaining ink with soapy water and wipe the fabric dry.
Melamine sponge
Universal cleaner - melamine sponge. Simply wipe the area with the ink paste with it until the stain disappears. Do not put in a lot of effort so as not to damage the material.
Household chemicals
If you do not want to damage eco-leather with folk remedies or an old stain, you can use household chemicals:
- Big D Multipurpose Foam Cleaner. Universal foam cleaner costing from 300 rubles. It is often used by motorists. It is enough to spray the foam composition onto the dirty area and after half an hour remove the foam with a dry cloth.
- Stain remover Dr. Beckmann. Special series “Pen” or “Pen and Ink” costing from 160 rubles. The stain remover is liquid, so you need to wipe the stain with a dampened sponge and wait about half an hour, and then rinse.
- Udalix Ultra. Another universal stain remover. There are many varieties. For eco-leather, it is convenient to use a stain remover pencil costing from 50 rubles.
This is by no means a complete list. Almost any stain remover labeled “for stubborn stains” will do. Individual lines like Dr. Beckmann “Handle” doesn’t come across very often.
How to remove ink from leatherette or eco-leather of light (white) color?
Cleaning light leatherette is easier than working with dark leather. The risk of lightening eco-leather is insignificant.
Suitable folk remedies:
- soda;
- milk;
- lemon acid;
- hydrogen peroxide.
Anti-Soviet
Eco-leather is not as durable as natural leather, so trying to remove a stain can lead to discoloration of the material or even the formation of a hole.
To prevent this from happening, you cannot:
- Rub the leatherette with great force.
- Try to scrape off the ink paste with your fingernail or scraper.
- Use aggressive substances such as solvent.
Be sure to test before using stain remover.

Conclusion
The ink paste is quite easily soiled, so it is recommended not to smear it on the surface of the product. The contaminated area should be immediately blotted with a dry cloth if the stain spreads quickly. But the usual stroke of a pen is not so noticeable. You can return everything to its original state in just half an hour.
It came off perfectly white from the white leatherette on the sofa. Everything is fine, without a trace
I easily wiped it off with acetone, but I have a white surface; if it’s colored, then a white spot may remain, because... acetone will corrode paint.
I don't know I have leatherette on the headboard but it didn't work for me with baking soda
